The formal Victorian architecture typical of the larger cities in south-east Australia are an English colonial heritage, and when viewed under a brilliant blue Australian sky when the summertime temperature can exceed forty degrees, the experience can be slightly surreal. This sensation is particularly amplified when the area is in a business district deserted by its vacationing workers, which was the case when I wandered around this section of Adelaide during a summer visit.

Artists such as the Australian painter Jeffrey Smart and Italian metaphysical painter Giorgio De Chirico captured the melancholy of such places with great finesse.
