Observer is a companion piece to another collage in this series, Data, and like that work it features a man pondering the meaning of his environment. The dark shape hanging from the top of the image could be construed as a figure. It was inserted after a viewing the great Sergio Leone film, Once Upon a Time in the West, which features a startling scene shot from the inside of a train carriage of a cowboy with a gun framed by a window, suddenly appearing outside and hanging upside down. Apart from being a device to focus the attention of the 'observer', this obscure reference is not intended to be understood by the viewer, it was inserted for my own amusement and is consistent with the generally playful attitude used in structuring the narratives of this series of collages.
