Ghost, which was originally titled Chamber, was inspired by the rather creepy Guy de Maupassant supernatural story, the Horla. The Horla is an elusive, sinister and parasitic presence that literary historians have described as a metaphor for madness. The 'thing' is semi-visible, evinced here as a negative shape cut out of the panel and positioned to suggest a monkey-on-the-back of the jangled central figure, who as a consequence is metaphorically, and literally, wired.
